The Schopenhauer Research Centre is an expression of the resurgance of Schopenhauer Research at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Mainz, developed and represented in the 80s of the last century by Rudolf Malter (1937–1994).

In close cooperation with and strongly supported by the Schopenhauer-Society, the Schopenhauer Research Centre has been institutionalised in July 2001 as a scientific institution of the University of Mainz.

Since 2008 the Schopenhauer Research Centre is supported to a considerable extent by the Dr Walter and Dr Gertrud Pförtner Foundation.

Its founder and director is Prof. Dr. Matthias Koßler.
